What are children’s concerns about braces?
Answering some frequently asked questions that children have before they get braces, is only party of what we’ll uncover today in this blog. Looking at solutions will ultimately help your child on their journey in getting, and having, braces.
Do braces hurt?
This is a concern for a lot of young people. The short answer for this is occasionally.
You’ll find that once they’re fitted the pain is nonexistent; it’s after a few hours when the discomfort kicks in. This will also be the case after each tightening.
However, it’s important to know that the slight discomfort wears-off within a day.
What’s going to happen?
Is your child scared? Going to the Orthodontist is scary for children alone; the idea of talking to a strangers, the prospect of all the foreign tools and products that’s used during the process, and answering their questions can be daunting.
But, it’s very import to let your child know that there’s no need to fear your orthodontist. Read up on how to help a child with dentophobia for an easier, more fun, appointment.
With the support of parents and the orthodontist themselves, you’re child will be reassured and informed from the very beginning; so your child will be aware of the tools, and the next steps.

Certain foods are a no-no
Knowing that you’re restricted with certain foods is enough to put even a grownup off; avoid:
- apples,
- caramel,
- popcorn,
- corn on the cob,
- and cookies,
- (hard and high-in-sugar foods).
But, it’s important to know why you’re unable to over indulge when it comes to sugary goods…
Sugar breaks down the tooth’s enamel, causing tooth decay. When wearing braces, there’s a problem, you can’t clean your teeth efficiently enough with there being brackets to work around – for young people it’s especially difficult, as their routine may not be as thorough.
If the quality of brushing lacks, the build-up of plaque will increase, then the tooth will rot. Therefore, it’s always best to avoid certain foods in the meantime.
Luckily, you’re not completely restricted here. Eating foods with low sugar allows you to still enjoy the foods that you eat, while also satisfying those cravings of yours:
- pancakes,
- yoghurt,
- fruit,
- ice-cream,
- cake,
- and jelly,
- (soft foods).
